NUDO opts for lighter bottles: sustainable and smart

The importance of lighter bottles

Glass is responsible for as much as 50% of the CO2 emissions of a bottle of wine or spirits. By reducing the weight of the bottle, we can significantly reduce these emissions.
The Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) has reinforced this point by launching the “Bottle Weight Accord” in 2023. The agreement aims to reduce the weight of 750ml bottles from 550 grams to 420 grams by the end of 2026.

The result? 144,428 fewer tons of CO2 are emitted each year – that’s the equivalent of the annual emissions of 18,000 households.
At NUDO, however, we go even further. Our bottles are on average 300 grams lighter than traditional bottles, which means we avoid even more CO2 emissions.

More than just CO2 savings

Using lighter bottles offers numerous advantages, both for the environment and for logistics:

  1. Transport Savings : Lighter bottles mean less weight in trucks, ships and planes. This leads to lower transport costs and less fuel consumption. More bottles can be transported per trip, making transport more efficient.
  2. Less raw materials : By using less glass, we save raw materials and energy in the production of new bottles.
  3. Better recycling : Thinner glass is easier to recycle and requires less energy to melt down.
  4. Lower production costs : Less material means lower costs for raw materials and energy. This helps companies save costs, which is beneficial for both producers and consumers in the long run.

Consumer perception: Glass thickness is not a quality indicator

A major challenge is consumer perception. Many people still think that a heavy bottle means quality. That needs to change. As Dr. Laura Catena, a well-known Argentinian winemaker, said during a SWR webinar: “The idea that heavy bottles are better is a misconception.” She emphasizes that producers of premium products also need to move to lighter bottles to send the right message to consumers.

So it is up to us, the producers, but also the consumers to let go of this idea. Heavy does not always mean better. The opposite is true: a light bottle indicates a conscious choice for sustainability, without sacrificing quality.

NUDO sets the standard

At NUDO, we do more than just talk about sustainability – we put it into action. Our bottles are not only lighter, but also designed for easier recycling, more efficient transportation and a smaller environmental footprint. Using lighter bottles is not a marketing gimmick, it is a necessary step towards a more sustainable future.

We believe that quality is not in the thickness of the glass, but in the taste of the product. By consciously choosing lighter bottles, we show that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.

What can you do as a consumer?

  • Choose wisely : Buy products that use lighter bottles.
  • Be critical : Heavy bottles are no guarantee of quality, on the contrary.
  • Stay informed : Support brands that put sustainability at the heart of their production process, such as NUDO.

With lighter bottles, we at NUDO are making a statement. Sustainability, taste and quality can go hand in hand. Together with other leading brands in Europe and beyond, we are committed to a cleaner planet — and a better drinking experience for you.
